Sara Fay (Kittrell) Schwam

Mrs. Schwam was born in Maryville, Blount County, Tennessee, daughter of Robert French Kittrell and
Ruth (Allison) Kittrell. She graduated from Maryville College in 1939 with a major in Latin, and she
received her M.A. from Vanderbilt in 1945.  She joined the HHS faculty as an English teacher in the fall
of 1946, and she married fellow faculty member, Howard Schwam, on December 27, 1946. She served
as the Beta Club sponsor while at HHS. By 1949 she and Mr. Schwam had returned to their hometown
of Maryville, Tennessee, where he took a position teaching languages at Maryville College. Mrs.
Schwam remained active with the college, serving on the board of directors for the Maryville College
alumni magazine, the Focus. Before her passing in 1999, she left a bequest to establish the J. Howard
and Sara Fay Schwam Scholarship to provide need-based scholarships to deserving undergraduates
enrolled in Peabody College.
