Pearl Virgia (Wilsford) Russwurm

Mrs. Russwurm was born April 18, 1880 at LaGrange, Lee County, Arkansas, daughter of James Clayton
Wilsford and Inez Virginia (Smith) Wilsford. She acquired her higher education at the West Point
Female Academy at West Point, Mississippi. She married Dr. Samuel C. Russwurm on March 26, 1902 at
LaGrange, and they moved to Hughes in 1925, where she began a teaching career with the Hughes
School System that lasted until her retirement in 1949.  She was apparently an effective, dedicated
and respected teacher, as evidenced by the honor accorded her by the naming of the HHS FTA
Chapter the Pearl Russwurm Future Teachers of America. She was a member of the Board of Stewards
of the Hughes Methodist Church, as well as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution
and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Mrs. Russwurm died November 27, 1959 at Marianna,
burial in the Marianna Memorial Park Cemetery. According to her obituary, Mrs. Russwurm’s
outstanding characteristic was her love for people, and even in her last days she was planning to
help others. Even after retirement, she retained her love for children and young people, working with
them at every opportunity.
