| Coach Bates was born April 9, 1946 in Aubry, Arkansas, son of Hayden H. and Lurlean (Mitchell) Bates. He received his B.S. Degree from Henderson State University at Arkadelphia, after which he taught one year at Cotton Plant, Arkansas, then spent the rest of his career in the Hughes school system. He married Marion Sue Houser in 1985. Coach Bates was known for having quite a sense of humor, and many testimonials attest to his popularity with students, fellow teachers, friends, and family members, to whom he was affectionately known as “Uncle Rooster.” He was of the Baptist faith. Coach Bates died February 20 at the age of 63, interment in Marianna Memorial Park, Marianna, Lee County, Arkansas |
