| Miss McKemie was born October 5, 1919 in Magnolia, Columbia County, Arkansas, daughter of John G. and Mary Pauline McKemie. She received her education in the Magnolia Public Schools, A & M College (later Southern State University, Magnolia), earned a BA degree from Henderson State College, and a Masters Degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee. She served Hughes High School for thirty-seven years, and she was an adjunct faculty member of Southern Arkansas University at Magnolia for ten years. Miss McKemie’s many accomplishments include past president of the State Delta Kappa Gamma (an international honorary society of professional women educators), past president of the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association, and a member of the state legislative committee of AARP. She served as consultant for numerous student workshops on leadership and student council throughout the U.S., and she received recognition by the National Association of Secondary School Principals for service to Youth. In addition, Miss McKemie served on the education staff for Arkansas Girl’s State for thirty-two years. She was a member of numerous state education committees and was named Distinguished Alumni at both Southern Arkansas University and Henderson State University. Locally, Miss McKemie was a member of Central Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and past president of the Baptist Women’s group. She also served as a past president and board member of the Columbia County American Cancer Society, a past president of Columbia Unit of Retired Teachers, and officer of the Columbia County AARP, and a member of Quota Club and Magnolia Newcomers Club. Miss McKemie passed away May 31, 2006, interment in the Magnolia City Cemetery. |
