| Alvin Clark Maples June 2, 1924 - December 12, 2011 Social Studies /Jr High Coach Tenure: 1957-1961 |
| Alvin Clark Maples was born 02 Jun 1924 in Leakesville, Mississippi, son of Alvin Winfred Maples and Beulah (Clark) Maples. He attended the University of Mississippi at Oxford, where he majored in education. While at Ol’ Miss, Mr. Maples was an active member of Pi Kappa Alpha, A.S.B. Council, and band. He married Emogene Hudspeth after graduation, and they both began their teaching careers in Mississippi. Mr. Maples joined the Hughes faculty in the ’57-’58 school year, and he taught social studies and coached junior high sports. He and Mrs. Maples left the Hughes system after the ’60-’61 school year, eventually moving to Millington, Shelby County, Tennessee, where they continued their teaching careers, and where he retired after 44 years of teaching and coaching. While at Millington he was a deacon at First Baptist Church and participated in the Adult and Hallelujah Choirs, and he worked over 30 years in the Baby Bed Nursery. He was an avid boat owner, taking much pleasure in teaching many young people to water ski and swim. Mr. Maples took pride in his yard, which won many awards for his Christmas decorations and its monthly beauty. He died 12 Dec 2011, interment in Northridge Woodhaven Cemetery, Millington, Shelby County, Tennessee. |
